The attitude we get when we use the word want collides with everything we are asked to be in the Word of God. You will never find God asking us to be selfish. He asks us to be selfless. God will never ask us to be prideful and arrogant, but to be humble and kind. In our western culture, we think we always need the next best thing, but do we need it to survive? No. We want it to survive.
How fitting that yesterday I hit on Trust and today as I am doing my own God Time I come across trust as the main theme. You ever have those moments where you feel like God is trying to make a massive point? Yeah, the past two days have been that way for me.
Psalm 62:8. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
How can one simple 6 letter word hold so much emotion in its letters? It is also the way people say it in a sentence. Sometimes it is said with a heavy and exhausting breath. The cross is not just a one way street though. Some people hear this and think “oh, I am good. I don’t have to do anything.” But the truth is the Cross is a two way street. Jesus took the first step (actually it was more like a giant leap 99.99% towards us). Now we need to decide what to do with the 0.01% of the way left, but it is so important! God has given us the chance to choice for ourselves. So what are you going to do?
They did exactly what Jesus told them they would do: Scatter.
What I want to focus on today is the veil being torn after Jesus gave up his spirit. If you remember from the Old Testament, the veil is too keep the spirit of God separate from the people of God’s eyes so they will not perish in all His glory. Also, it meant that only a priest of the temple could go in and pray on behalf of the people. The veil being torn is of huge significance to us. Because of the veil being torn we are able to commune with God without a third party present. Because the veil was torn down we, as Gentiles, were able to be brought into the family of God.
