As I drifted through the fog of Lake Michigan, I started to see land right before dawn. I found an area that didn’t look as if people frequent the beach and docked there. I grabbed my pack and turned toward the forest. My eyes swept over the trees in front of me, took another swig of the spell, and was about to start my trek to the Canadian Wilderness when I heard a twig snap.
“Hi sis,” hung in the air. My eyes darted around until I saw Theo walk out of the fog toward the boat.
“Alena, I know you are here somewhere. Show yourself,” Theo called out glancing around the boat, waiting for me to appear.
He couldn’t see me. The spell worked, but I forgot to sprinkle the spell on the boat — dang it!
“Go away Theo,” I mentally threw at him.
He froze, “Alena, I am here to help — to protect you.”
“You are my younger brother. I don’t think of you as a protector. More like a distraction!” I shot at him.
“Alena, just show yourself! I am not here to take you back to AMP. I am here to help you find Brina Castle,” Theo started shouting into the atmosphere.
I took a few steps toward my brother and searched his face, “Prove you are here to help me and not feed me to the wolves.”
He took a deep breath, “I will let you fully into my mind so you can see ALL my thoughts.”
I stifled a laugh, “No way! You have been hiding your thoughts from me for years! I will not trust your mind.”
Theo let out a sigh of frustration, “Fine!” He took out his cell phone and threw it into the lake. Then he took out an earpiece and smashed it between his shoe and a nearby rock.
“You believe me now?” he asked into the void.
“Yes,” I said out loud moving toward him, “Now open your mouth. You need to drink this and we need to get a move on before Mom sends the army.”
I poured the mixture in Theo’s mouth, grabbed his arm, and pulled him into the forest toward the Canadian border as she finally came into Theo’s view.
