- What do you think the day after Jesus’s death was like for the people? (Think about all different types of people: The Disciples, The Pharisees, Jesus’s mortal family, his followers, the leaders of Rome, etc).
- Process some of the emotions that each of the above groups were feeling. Make a list of those different emotions.
- Do you think the anybody felt any hope during this day?
32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.John 16:32
When I reflect on today, I want to know and feel what the people around Jesus felt when he died. The Pharisees probably sat on their high horse, basking in what they thought was the glory of ‘being right.’ The leaders of Rome probably were thrilled they didn’t have to hear or deal with the whining religious leaders about Jesus anymore–they could continue their “Roman” lifestyle in peace. The family and friends of Jesus probably were in such grief and mourning at their loss. And on top of that the Disciples, in their mourning, went back to the life Jesus pulled them out of.
They did exactly what Jesus told them they would do: Scatter.
Can you imagine the disappointment the followers of Jesus felt when their so called King died? Can you imagine the anger they felt at God for giving them false hope?
I imagine the day between as a hopeless day. All the hopes and dreams of being free from the Roman empire were dashed because of the cross.
What they didn’t know and what we need to remember is that Jesus was not gone, but just fighting a battle for us. Jesus had a task and during that time we was completing the war God sent him to wage. This day was crucial. This day should be just as important to us as the crucifixion and the resurrection, because if Jesus didn’t experience death the other two days mean nothing.
9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.Hebrews 2:9
So as you go about today, remember today is apart of the promise Jesus made to us. 3 days. he will rise in three days. This is day two and day three is just around the corner.
