Reviewer Thoughts: At first glance, I enjoyed the movie for what it is worth, but as I slept on it I noticed something things I would have liked to see. The posters and trailer made the ballerina look as if she had a part, but she did not. Only the 5-minute ballet scene and then she was gone. Why put her up on posters if she has a minor/background role? Also, Keira Knightley was a little over the top and her transformation to the bad guy was something we could all see coming. The fact that the mice looked harmless when in the real nutcracker they are rats and vicious also tipped me off to their actual role in the war. There were some substance and background knowledge lacking that could have helped the story. The background they did show was short and not very well presented. Also, I felt as if the Nutcracker didn’t have much part in the movie. Yes, he followed her around, but he was not the main attraction. The name should have changed or he should have had a bigger place in the movie.
Overall I do love the concept and I am a sucker for these kinds of movies so I will own it when it comes out because on an entertainment level I can enjoy it, but on a storyteller level, I want to rewrite it for them.
I do recommend it for middle grades and lower. It is a fantastical world that they can transport to in their dreams.
